An abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) is a surgical procedure that can address excess skin and fat of the abdomen. If the patient has a diastasis (separation of the two "six-pack" muscles in midline abdomen, commonly seen with pregnancies), the two rectus abdominis muscles can also be brought back together at the time of surgery; this will create a tighter core and improved contour.
Liposuction of the love handle areas is also commonly performed during this surgery to achieve the best contour. A typical abdominoplasty incision runs along the bikini line from one hip bone to the other. If a significant amount of tissue needs to be removed to achieve the desired results, an incision may also be made around the belly button so that it can stay in an aesthetically ideal position.
